Virgil Abloh named Creative Director of Louis Vuitton
Virgil Abloh is collaboratively everywhere. Nike, IKEA, Jimmy Choo and Byredo are just a few of the brands the Creative Director of Off-White has recently partnered with. Now we add Louis Vuitton Menswear designer to his repertoire.
The famed luxury brand was pleased to announce Abloh as its new Creative Director as Kim Jones, who is also Abloh’s mentor and friend, has exited for Dior.
Abloh is also breaking barriers as the first African American as Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, which is one of the old and most powerful fashion houses.
“This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start.” Abloh stated Sunday.
What’s phenomenal about Abloh is he does hold an engineering degree, he has no formal fashion education. He did however intern for Fendi, alongside Kanye West, in 2009. In 2013, Abloh created Off-White, the gray area between black and white, where luxury, street and music all collide. Since it’s launch, he’s launched Off-White Women’s wear, which has been seen on Cara Delevingne, Rihanna and Beyonce.
Congrats to Virgil...but since Kanye’s homeboy of the new Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, does that mean he’s gonna start wearing Louis Vuitton again?!
