You guys must’ve thought that I wasn’t going to write about The Carter’s “Everything is Love” album?! Ha! I just needed a moment to relay my edges. Receiving a text message from sister in a group chat amongst a few other friends that we rarely use unless it’s some emergency like this, was the best news a gal could get on a Saturday. Apparently, Christina Aguilera dropped an album the day before but somehow the world missed it. Mind you I wasn’t sipping mimosas on a yacht but I was clocked in at work! I legit was about fake sick so I could go home to partake in this “suprisery”.
Not to be mistaken for Dwayne Carter but Beyoncé and Sean Carter dropped an epic surprise album and video Saturday afternoon! Of course it was exclusive to Tidal and I had to resubscribe but it was worth my little $12.99! Now I will be the first to admit that this album is definitely more Beyoncé (she knew this would be the only way we would accept her rapping) than Jay but when Jay shows up, he definitely shows out!
Let’s get into “Apesh*t” that is accompanied by a video filmed in The Lourve, THE LOURVE!!!! The art work, the fashion mixed with semi hood antics mixed with smooth flows produced by The Migos. I cannot! First off Beyonce’, my phone better ring we you call your girls to go on your spaceship! Whilst jumping of the stage, they’re have been many people that believe that The Carter’s are arrogant and only acknowledge European culture, then what was “Lemonade”? I truly believe its them breaking down the doors in forcing themselves into a culture that’s been so adamant about exclusion while biting the style of other cultures and passing it off as their own! But I digress.
The opening track “Summer” is everything I’d imagine a crazy intense yet passionate love would be. Beyoncé’s sexy and sultry vocals belt out, “lets make love in the summertime. On the sand, beach sand, make plans to be on each other’s arms.” After years of speculation and an elevator debacle, The Carter’s have now been musically open about the cheating that’s plagued there marriage. So while this songs gives me “Drunk in Love” vibes. From what I gather, it’s also about reflecting and forgiving as well. Love.
The Pharrell produced “Nice” is so much everything but could be perceived as The Carter’s and Pharrell bragging but “I can do anything, hell nah” has so much power in that one line. We are taught as Americans, we can do anything and be anything, when in fact if you are a person of color you cannot. Which is why Jay says “f**k your subpoenas and misdemeanors, was too busy touring out all your arenas...after all these years of drug trafficking, time to remind me that I’m black again.” Again, America has a way of reminding people, correction, people of color of their past when they are so far removed from it. Another line that sticks out is Beyoncé’s “I ain’t never seen a ceiling in my whole life that’s word to Blue” not only am I a woman on top in a male dominated industry but I’ve broken so many barriers as a woman of color and I’ll never stop. Yes I wake up now and express gratitude and hit play on “Nice” every morning.
“Friends” will be for another day but just know it will be in everyone’s Instagram caption all summer. Probably more than Drakes “Nice For What” and Future’s “I’m good luv, enjoy”.
Overall, I’m gonna give The Carter’s a A-. Great production but not enough Jay. How many times is Jay gonna beg us beyhivers for forgiveness? We got it Jay...Beyoncé forgiving you isn’t my business.
In the meantime, enjoy these photos of my sister and I and The Lourve. We also had it to ourselves! Lol
